On July 13 2001, a loud wake-up call alarmed the administrator and the computer security community because of a worm called "Code Red", which is also known as I-Worm.Bady and W32.Bady.worm. Code Red is a worm where it duplicates files; a self-replicating code that exploits a known vulnerability in IIS (Internet Information Services) servers. This worm was detected and was spreading rapidly to systems connected to the Internet. Code Red has an unclear origin. "One of the known variants of the malicious program has defaced Web sites with the message "Hacked by Chinese!" but the Chinese government and others have said the worm probably did not come from China."
Code Red is one of the most dangerous
computer virus. It is a standalone malicious program which uses computer and
network resources to replicate itself. This kind of worm runs in the memory and
exists only in the memory. According to CERT/CC, an estimate of more than
250,000 systems was infected in just 9 hours. This kind of worm is not
just a simple virus that will slightly damage or destroy computer but as what I
have researched this worm is really the most dangerous one that have a serious
effect to the computers especially when it is connected to internet.
Because, this worm also infects the computers connected to internet. The
damages caused by this worm were estimated at a total of $2 billion.
This
Code Red worm may include code or harmful software such as viruses or
Trojans designed to cause damage or disruption to a computer system and the
network. This 21st century computer virus managed to penetrate tens of
thousands of systems that ran Microsoft Windows NT as well as Windows 2000
server software. Core Red was developed and created so that
all computers infected by it will be used against the official
website White House.
Based on my research, rebooting will
eliminate the infection completely done by this worm, since the worm's code is
not written to a hard disk and only exists in memory. This worm may one of the
dangerous viruses but its infection may also be eliminated.
